Kenyan Businesses on Facebook

I have been curious so I set out to determine how Kenyan Businesses are utilizing social networks in their businesses. Specifically, I wanted to establish how both Facebook Fanpage and Twitter are being used but decided to start with Facebook first. So I posed this question via Twitter while I set out to do further research through more demanding channels. Initially, this was to be a contest post where the businesses with biggest number of Fans would be the acclaimed. But then a Tweet by @Kachwanya seconded by @Sokoanalyst set me straight where they argued that the same yardstick does not apply to all businesses since each industry has varied reach in terms of its audience/clientele. In simpler terms, it is ridiculous to compare the fanpage of Capital FM to that of Socialight Media Kenya for instance. What might make sense is comparing it to that of a player in the same industry like Ghetto Radio.

But looking at social media in general, though numbers are important in terms of reach, there are other equally important metrics to take into consideration and which are contingent on the objectives set forth in the creation of a social platform either on Facebook or Twitter. If the objective is to broadcast, to engage, to convert, to sell etc, which KPI’s were identified and are they being met becomes a more appropriate question? I made comments with regard to some of the Fanpages that stood out for one reason or the other. Furthermore, due to the difficulty in establishing the official Fanpages in cases where there were multiple accounts, I will leave that to those who created these account to settle that.

My research Exposed me to so many Kenyan Businesses that use Facebook Fanpages. The following is the result. Enjoy! My apologies for not hyperlinking the pages, it was a bit cumbersome.

  • Marvin I like the analysis you have done here its commendable to say the least, very few blogger s in Kenya if any would take their time to do such a tedious work. but the truth is we need more online analysts than political analysts!

  • Marvin Tumbo

Thanks Mugweru. You are right. I have been looking for online analysis on a lot of things but there is nothing out here. What I have done is a bit basic that is where we start. I hope to provide in-depth analysis in the coming months and years. Regards

    Hi Gachie,

This was a list and not an analysis hence the general nature of it all. I will be writing an analysis soon. I just needed to know which pages are out there. I have just added your Fanpage.

Lemme tell you the bigwigs you forgot:

    1. Easy FM: They have around 80 thousand fans, though I suspect this is because they didn't specify that they were Easy FM Kenya.

    2. Omosh (Yule wa Tahidi High): He has 45 thao fans and counting. And that's without even updating a single thing! Biggest Facebook celeb in Kenya.
